Open to the Public: Friday Night Story Slam • Saturday Night Olio
I may have mentioned our conference before. You may have some thoughts about what happens at a Storytelling Conference. After attending 9, I have learned a storytelling conference is much more than folks just telling a story. Teens to Geriatrics, tellers, listeners, teachers, clergy, healthcare, non-profits, professionals, hobbyists, and everyone in between have and can attend Sharing the Fire the Northeast Storytelling Conference. This year's offering includes:
- Local college students participating in a Story Slam competition.
- Professional voice over artists sharing the secrets of their craft from recording to being published on audio book or CD?
- Drawing on their years of experience as therapists and professional storytellers, Elisa Pearmain, LMHC and Lani Peterson Psy.D will guide participants through the stages of narrative healing as it applies to individual and group therapeutic work.
- A mixed age group will embody their narrative by allowing their body and voice to support their text.
- Experienced and beginning storytellers will explore techniques for creating personal stories from memories and senses, through a stimulating process involving visualization, movement, writing and spontaneous telling.
- Three distinguished panelists – Onawumi Jean Moss, Kiran Singh Sirah, and Loren Niemi – will discuss the uses of new storytelling forms, and of old forms in new ways, often on the edges of our society.
- Marketing is about getting your name out in front frequently. There will be many that will learn more at: Enhance Your Online Presence: Blog It Baby!
- Whether folktale or personal story, is the female protagonist a hero or heroine? Attend a session to discover the distinction between the Hero’s journey and the Heroine’s path.
- Guy Walks into a Bar: Making people laugh
- Explore the role of storytelling via slam poetry as a force for social change.
- A playful approach to developing characters and creating their stories.
- Participants will explore vocal flexibility that preserves the storyteller’s voice in guided exercises led by a voice therapist and storyteller.
- Through techniques designed specifically for young children, for aging adults with dementia, and for children and adults with developmental disabilities, there will be a workshop that will help storytellers of all abilities and experience levels learn new ways to connect with every audience.
- Listen to several LANES members who have been parlaying their skills in story eliciting, sharing and telling to help organizations achieve their goals.
- Storytelling is the heart of Don White’s career. Whether he is singing and playing his guitar, talking to his audience, or writing his memoir, it all starts with a story. Learn how at his Humor workshop and see how at his closing concert on Sunday!
- There are Story Swaps where anyone can tell or listen to a story. There is always a corner, a hallway, an outside gathering under the sun where folks gather to connect.
Of course there are more workshops and concerts that you can shake a stick at. But if you know me,(and most of you do if you are on this blog) I love to tell and hear stories!
